- At the
heart of our approach stands the conviction that everybody has the
right to equal opportunities in education. Since Europe is made up
of many multicultural communities that speak different languages
and behave according to different cultural patterns, it is
important to reflect on the challenges that schools have to face
in responding to the needs of these communities and in responding
to the needs of the individual pupil, each with his or her
specific background. Awareness of the need to promote
intercultural teaching, or in other words, that teaching that aims
at creating understanding and appreciation between members of
different cultural backgrounds is a step forward, but is
definitely not far going enough if our aim is to remove from the
world of education all structural barriers that penalise certain
groups or individuals more that others. An intercultural approach
to teaching is necessary that structurally analysis where and in
what ways those barriers are present or raised. For what about the
curriculum and the teaching practice interculturalism needs to be
a methodological issue and not a content issue.
- In
education the ultimate touchstone of success is the individual
performance of the individual child. During this part of life
basic skills have to be acquired, intellectual skills have to be
developed and life skills have to be appropriated. We believe that
only approaches that build on all earlier experiences in the
child’s social life and school career can lead to a successful
integration in the school and social community in the new country
of settlement. It is therefore important linking earlier
experiences with the actual educational practice.
